HP PCs, Printers - Finding the serial number

Every HP product has a unique identifying number called a serial number. You need to know the serial number when working with support, servicing the product, or determining if the product is still under warranty.

Find the serial number of an HP computer

Every HP computer has a serial number on the surface of the computer. You can also use Windows or ChromeOS to find the number.

Windows

For HP computers with Windows, find the serial number by pressing a key combination.

  1. Use a key press combination to open a System Information window:

    • Laptops: Using the built-in keyboard, press Fn + Esc.

    • Desktops or All-in-One computers: Press Ctrl + Alt + S.

  2. Find the serial number in the window that opens. If a System Information window does not open, continue with these steps.

  3. In Windows, search for and open Command Prompt.

  4. In the command prompt window, type wmic bios get serialnumber, and then press Enter.

Chrome OS

For Chromebooks, locate the serial number from the login screen.

  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. On the login screen, press the Alt + V keys simultaneously.

The operating system version, firmware version, and serial number display in the top right corner of the screen.

Note:

On an HP supported Chromebook, the serial number has ten digits, lists the product number, and has an HP label.

Labeling on the computer

Look for a label or number etched on the product's surface.

  • Search the outside of your computer for a number labeled as Serial Number, S/N, or SN. The number might display on a label or be etched on the product's surface.

    Examples of where you might find the serial number:

    • On the underside or back edges of the laptop or Chromebook

    • If you have a laptop with a removable battery, inside the battery compartment

    • If you have a detachable laptop, between the tablet and the dock (remove the tablet to reveal the serial number)

    • On the back of an All-in-One PC

Find the serial number of an HP printer

Every HP printer has a serial number applied to the surface of the printer. If you have connected the printer to a computer, you can also use HP software to retrieve the number.

Labeling on the printer

Look for a label on the product's surface.

  • Search your printer for a Serial Number, Serial No, S/N, or SN printed on a label. You might need to open the ink cartridge access area or scanner lid to reveal the label.

HP Smart app

Find the serial number using the HP Smart app.

  1. Open the HP Smart app. If you do not have HP Smart, download it from 123.hp.com or your app store.

  2. From the app home screen, select your printer name or image.

  3. Select Printer Information to view the serial number.

HP Printer Assistant

Find the serial number in HP Printer Assistant.

  1. Click Print, Scan, & Fax at the top of the window.

  2. Under Print, click Maintain Your Printer.

    The HP Toolbox opens.

  3. Click the Device Information tab to reveal the serial number.

HP LaserJet software

Find the serial number in HP LaserJet software.

  1. Click HP Device Toolbox, click the name of your printer, and then click OK.

  2. Click to reveal the serial number.

HP Utility (Mac)

You can find the serial number using the HP Utility printer software on your macOS or OS X computer.

  1. Open Finder, and then click Go in the top menu bar.

  2. Click Applications, and then double-click the HP folder.

  3. Double-click HP Utility.

  4. Select your printer model from the DEVICES list.

  5. Double-click Device Information.

    The HP Utility Device Information window opens to display the printer model information, including the serial number.

Find the serial number of an HP monitor

Find the serial number of your HP monitor with the on-screen menu display, or on the outside of the monitor.

  • If your monitor is working, use the menu buttons on the monitor to open the on-screen menu, and then select Information. The serial number displays in the information window.

  • If your monitor is not working or the on-screen menu does not display the serial number, look on the back of the monitor, the underside of the pedestal, or under a cosmetic cover for a label with a Serial Number, Serial No, S/N, or SN.

Find the serial number of other HP products

Find the serial number of other HP products. The serial number can be found in the following locations.

Use a magnifying glass to help find the serial number for small items. Most supplies, such as ink and toner cartridges, do not have a serial number.

  • Laser etching on the surface of the product

  • Inside the battery compartment

  • A purchase invoice or receipt

  • Product packaging or shipping box

  • Documentation that came with the product

  • A label applied to the product (usually on the underside)
